Review: 10/13/06 MuteMath show in Dallas

I saw MuteMath perform at the Gypsy Tea Room this past friday Oct. 13. Shiny Toy Guns and Jonzetta opened up the show. I missed Jonzetta, but saw all of Shiny Toy Guns’ performance. The place was packed, I didn’t realize what a fan-base MuteMath has. It was a much younger crowd than I usually see, half the bar had to be closed off to control the alcohol.
Shiny Toy Guns have a full, rich sound. The female vocalist has a great voice, that was the highlight of the show. Some of the songs were pretty good but It seemed they lacked some life experience. It mimicked the 80s electo goth sounds of New Order, Joy Divison, and Depeche Mode…sans the drugs, darkness, and sadness. It seemed a little contrived and not very authentic, I was not really wowed by this one.
MuteMath’s latest album is ok I guess. Wait, I mean this new U2 album is well, U2. Wait, is this Oasis? I felt a little tricked with this band. There was something wrong I couldn’t place my finger on it…oh wait there it is, the suck button! They did give a high-energy performance…the lead singer did a little crowd surfing, threw a chair into the set-up, there was some mayhem up in the tea room that night. Their instrumentals are great, but the lyrics are just horrible, the worst thing ever. They should just mute the lyrics and do instrumental pieces, that would be great!! The band has potential, but again it seemed contrived and shallow. I felt like I left with a pocketful of whammies!!

Come on….Now whammy…No whammy…..
Whawhawhawhaaaa…...Whammy.
