Cat Power: Dallas, TX show

Cat Power at Gypsy Tea Room 9/16/06

Cat Power’s Chan Marshall took the stage about 9:45 after the band played a few songs to get things started. She came out all smiles and ready to go. The show was a really enjoyable and her voice was more amazing in person than on record. She played a lot of songs from the latest album” The Greatest”. In the middle of the show the Memphis Rhythm Band took a break to let Cat Power do her solo thing. From the Covers Record she played “I found a Reason”..which you might recognize from V for Vendetta…and she played the song I was really hoping to hear “Naked if I wanted to…” She has a way of owning the songs she covers, putting her own signature on them. She even did a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”. She really seemed to be enjoying herself onstage.

Besides from giving the audience a wonderful performance, Chan Marshall let herself shine through and be seen on stage. Saturday night, she was smiling, chatty, happy and radiant and seemed to be enjoying herself immensely. This being my first time to see her live, I was having a difficult time believing the stories of her past performances. Not that I don’t believe the stories – I’ve heard far too many of them. But this Cat Power didn’t hold back. Maybe some of her fidgety quirks lingured but the singer’s appeal has always partly relied on converting those idiosyncrasies into something like sexual charisma. Cat Power is really making a transition into a performer to take seriously. For Dallas on Saturday night, she was sublime. And charming.

Cat Power’s Chan Marshall is known for her haunting voice and her simple, minimal arrangements that seduce you into her world. Chan Marshall has the power to draw all the attention in the room and make the world stop spinning.

In Cat Power’s latest album ‘The Greatest’ (not a greatest hits, but the brand-new studio album), Marshall returned to Memphis, pursuing this time the slinky Hi Records sound of the 70s, famed for its sensuous feel and beguiling rhythms. ‘The Greatest’ adds to Cat Power’s singular sound all the elements that make an Al Green record great: Memphis horns, funky string arrangements, smooth background vocals.

There are signs of a new Chan Marshall emeriging in her current tour with the Memphis Rhythm band. Chan Marshall has been notorious for frustrating her fans with her constant visible discomfort on stage, she mumbles, abandons songs halfway through, hides behind her hair, and has been known to turn her back on the audience or just leave the stage. Her current performances are a girl coming out of her shell showing signs of confidence, and a future of being a great performer. I have been a fan of Cat Power for sometime now and I can’t wait to see this new Chan Marshall in action.
