I saw this posted on inhabitat (an excellent site). This particular article is about an architectural project designed by UCX Architects. The project in Rotterdam dubbed the Urban Cactus will accommodate 98 residential units within 19 floors. Situated on the end of harbor, the architects chose to conceptualize the project as belonging to the “green nerve” rather than the surrounding urban structure. The “green” is revealed in a stacked set of alternated planes. The stacked alternated living planes reveal the encompassing “green” of the project. The pattern conceived by the living planes creates more space and allows for each unit to receive more sunlight than a typical stacked composition.

Plantwall from Green Fortune is a new way of integrating greenery into spaces.
This vertical application of greenery provides a powerful impact on the envirnonment where it is built. It is almost like being outside inside. Plantwall can be varied both in size and shape. Depending on the size of the wall and the impact you want to create the choice of plants can be adjusted. One can opt for a sophisticated wall that will keep it’s well groomed shape over time or you can have wild, heavily growing wall that looks as if it were in its natural habitat.
Plantwall makes it possible to have lots of greenery without losing floor space. Besides the impression of beauty, plants also provides oxygen and humidity to improve the air quality. Some plants even have air cleaning properties.
The integrated drip irrigation system makes the watering very smooth. Unlikely of what you may think, the wall does not spread very much moisture thanks to the textile materials used. This makes it possible to use plantwall in places you may think are too sensitive for a project like this.
Via the drip irrigation system, also fertilizer is distributed inside the four-layer textile of the wall. This process is programmed by Green Fortune and automatically controlled. Each new plantwall project can be tailored to suit any demands. They also offer a one year guarantee and service agreement for each plantwall.

The Ecopod E1 makes it easier for consumers to live a greener lifestyle. The Ecopod E1 is a self-contained recycling center that has storage capacity for bottles, newspapers, plastic bags and other recyclables. Just throw your bottle or can in the appropriate slot, step on a foot pedal, and enjoy the satisfying sound of compaction. The compacted container falls into an internal bin, which can be removed for redemption or curbside disposal. Each pod has storage capacity for approximately 50 crushed containers, while an upper compartment has additional room for glass bottles, newspapers and other recyclable materials. Everything neatly stored away and ready to moved to the next step in the recycling chain.
The Ecopod was designed in partnership with BMW Designworks USA, and is available online from Ecopod in black or white for $328, and starting in December 2006 also at Williams-Sonoma.

Founded in 2003 and headquartered in New York City, Beck(y) is a shrewdly designed collection of handcrafted,
one-of-a-kind bags and accessories constructed with recycled skateboards and plush, high-end fabrics.
Beck(y)’s handbags named sk8bags are hand made, and a very time-consuming. She washes
the decks and removes the grip tape, but makes a clear conscious effort to alter the decks as little as possible
because she strives to always uphold the integrity
of her source material.
Recycled skateboards are vital to Beck’s operation, and she’s fortunate to have a handful of generous supporters
who send her used and warranty boards on a regular basis. Beck currently receives decks from 5boro Skateboards,
Giant Distribution, Zumiez, Simi Valley’s Skatelab Skatepark, Old Star Skateshop, ZJ Boarding House, among others.
To keep the recycled decks coming her way, and to give back to the skateboarding community at the same time, Beck
established the Boards 4 Bowls program. For every used board she receives Beck donates $3 to a variety of non-profit
organizations dedicated to building and maintaining public skateparks across the country. Beck currently works with
the Tony Hawk Foundation, Jeff Anderson Memorial Fund and Elemental Awareness.

You can find Sk8bags available at “Kül“:http://www.houseofkul.com/, 1303 Main Street, The Davis Building, Downtown Dallas (214-745-5585)
or you can purchase online at beckycity.com

A couple years ago while cleaning up around her workbench, Dana Roth was shocked to discover just how many beer cans littered the space. A different person might have used the moment to question their alcohol consumption, but Dana decided to crack open another beer and make some jewelry. First in Oregon, now in Vermont, she’s taking on the world one cold one at a time.
In the spirit of recycling & creating less waste, D-Licious has made available aluminum can jewelry.
All of their Beer-Can-Jewelry is made of sterling silver & aluminum beer or soda cans that D. Roth (or a close friend) has personally drank from. The
aluminum is secured to the jewelry with sterling rivets & protected from damage by ledges (on the rings) or caps (at the end of the bracelets).

Michael Jantzen’s Wind Shaped Pavilion
The Wind Shaped Pavilion is a design proposal for a large fabric structure that can be used as a public or private pavilion. As a lightweight fabric structure, the wind slowly and randomly rotates each of the six segments around a central open support frame. This continually alters the shape of the pavilion, while at the same time generating electrical power for its nighttime illumination.”
Rubik’s Cube-like, it “starts out as a relatively symmetrical form. Then the wind begins to alter that shape randomly, with only a slim chance of ever returning to its original symmetry.”
If the structure’s scale and the materials were to change, it could become an apartment complex, and or some other commercial building. In this case, the occupants could take control and rotate the segments to adjust to changing desires or needs, such as weather conditions, best views, etc.

Escama is a new companies that combine clever design with ethical trading to create a line of bags and purses made with recycled aluminium woven together with nylon fishing line.
The combination of the metallic material and the nylon thread results in a line of bags that are both very soft but with an slightly aggressive urban edge, with the fish scale pattern recalling medieval chainmails.
ESCAMA, “fish scales” in Portuguese, consists of three friends working out of San Francisco and Brasilia, Brazil. Their eco-friendly concepts are both fashionable and functional.

Amy Pfaffman creates jewelry out of functional objects. This ring is made from the eyes of a Teddy Bear.
Amy Pfaffman’s degree in industrial design from Rhode Island School of Design in 1990 cemented her appreciation for functional objects. In her jewelry she turns functional objects into art using cold connections and mechanical joints paired with sterling silver. She has a way of making ordinary things, many people generally would throw away, into something to appreciate and admire. She hopes to inspire others to appreciate the beauty in the things they use every day and know that great thought was put into their design.
You can find earrings, bracelets, necklaces made out of almost anyting imaginable, chopsticks, coffee beans, fuses, guitar picks, vinyl records just to name a few.
You can purchase her jewerly at many museum gift shops and other fine stores located across the U.S.
