Umphrey’s McGee headlined this past friday 11/10/06 at the Granada Theater in Dallas, Texas. Outformation opened the night up, and had the crowd moving and ready for more. If you like Widespread Panic you are gonna love these guys…Sam Holt the lead man was Houser’s guitar tech and sat in with Panic many a times. The sound was very reminiscent of Panic’s golden days. They delivered a tight set with great richness and tone, basically these guys really rock!! Umphrey’s McGee were what can I say, WOW!! They were more amazing than I remembered. They played two great sets and had the crowd begging for an encore!! Their mesmorizing and infectious sounds stem from their seamless transitons from rock to metal to funk to folk to jazz-fusion. They leave you fiending for more!! It was definitly one of the best performances I have seen in a while. If you haven’t seen them yet, you are really missing out!! Umphrey’s McGee has attracted many a jam-band aficionados over the past years. With a pretty spirited following this band continues to make plenty of headway in building an audience through it’s live performances. Umphrey’s Mcgee has attracted national attention by performing at Bonnarro and South by Southwest Music festivals. Umphrey’s Mcgee brings alive improvisational changes from funk, jazz, prog-rock and metal in all of their shows which helps to make their live shows unique and memorable. For me I have been an “Umphreak” or “McGeek” for sometime now. My first live experience was in 2003 at Zydeco in Birmingham, Alabama. After that I was completely hooked, live experiences tend to do that…sometimes bands are good on studio recordings but live always blows you away. Sometimes I find it hard to listen to my favorite band’s studio recordings, live bootlegs capture so much more energy and improv. Once you hear a band live there is no other way. Umphrey’s McGee does prove to be able to successly move from live to studio performance, their latest album Safety in Numbers has had rave reviews. Umphrey’s McGee continues to tour the states with their mind-blowing live performances. Umphrey’s McGee is scheduled to perform in Dallas, TX at Granada Theater November 10 (friday). And I’m excited to see Outformation who is also set to perform. Sam Holt the guitarist/vocalist for Outformation is Widespread Panic’s guitar tech. Holt was Houser’s guitar tech where he bonded and learned a great deal from Houser. Following Houser’s death in 2002, Holt began to devote his time more and more into Outformation. Holt is set to leave Panic is near future to focus his energy into his band Outformation. I can’t wait to see this performance, it’s going to one great night of live music!!!
11.10.06 :: Umphrey’s McGee
The Granada Theater
- with Outformation to open
- doors: 8:00 pm
- show: 9:00 pm
- All Ages
- tickets are $18.00
